Blindness can reduce the quality of one’s life by making them dependent on others even for simple tasks. Thanks to advancements in medical science and technology, scientists and researchers are coming up with novel ways to cure blindness. And in today’s video, we will be taking an in depth look into one of these technologies – The Bionic Eye We have all seen the bionic eye of Robocop, well we’re not quite advanced enough yet to create a completely bionic eye but we are getting there. Researchers across the world are attempting to restore vision for the visually impaired and it seems like a team of researchers at The Monash University has made some incredible breakthroughs. The Gennaris Bionic Vision System has been developed by a collaboration between a team of researchers at the Monash Vision Group situated in the Monash University. The Gennaris bionic vision system or simply – The Bionic Eye, is for blind people who have damaged optic nerves, which prevent the transmission of visual data from the retina of the eye to the visual cortex of the brain. In a nutshell, the bionic eye developed by the team at Monash University can bypass these damaged optic nerves by creating an alternate route for the visual data to travel from the retina to the visual cortex of the brain. Existing technologies are not yet able to do this, which is why the bionic eye developed by the Monash University is expected to be a modern-day scientific miracle. For patients recovering from a medical emergency, entering the new world of prosthetics can be painful. Most want to return to normal life: to drive a car, to workout at the gym, to clean up around the house. But most traditional prosthetic limbs are crude, expensive, and fragile. Approximately 10% of patients requiring an advanced prosthetic arm can afford them today. One company trying to upend the market is PSYONIC, creator of the Ability Hand. Designed and manufactured in-house with hybrid manufacturing methods, including 3D printing, injection and silicone molding, and CNC machines, the Ability Hand is promising to restore their life, and mobility, back to what it was. Larry Hester, 66, has been blind for half his life from a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. In September, 2014, an electronic stimulator was surgically implanted in his left eye. On October 1st, 2014 Duke eye surgeon Dr. Paul Hahn turned it on for the first time. While the device does not restore vision in the normal sense, it provides light-and-darkness differentiation. He's the seventh person in the United States to receive the visual aid since the device, known as the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, was approved by the FDA. Duke is only the fourth center in the country to implant the device since approval.

🤍 A bionic man complete with artificial organs, synthetic blood and robotic limbs has gone on display at the Science Museum in London. Costing some 600,000 euros he is expensive but not as pricey as the Six Million Dollar Man of the cult 1970s TV series. The man - who is called Rex - can sense objects in front of him with retinal implants and cochlear implants to allow him to hear. He incorporates some of the latest advances in mechanical limbs, as well as a heart and lungs, an artificial pancreas, kidney, spleen and trachea, and a functional blood circulatory system.
