For the British and Canadians it turned into a series of terrible battles as they fought 8 Panzer divisions equipped with 600 tanks, keeping the bulk of the German tank forces facing them, allowing the Americans to break out further west. The defeat of the German forces at the Falaise Gap in August 1944 was the culmination of an effort that had begun the previous June, when British, U.S. and Canadian troops stormed the Normandy beaches during Operation Overlord. There then followed the bloody fighting for the all-important city of Caen. The Falaise Gap was an area between Argentan and Falaise, southeast of Caen. For the Germans, it represented an escape route from the advancing Allied troops, who threatened to trap the 7th Army, 5th Panzer Army and Panzergruppe Eberbach. The Canadian 1st British 2nd Armies had finally broken out from Caen after weeks of hard and bitter fighting which had stalled the entire Normandy invasion. At the same time, the US 1st and 3rd Armies had forced their way off the Normandy beaches and were heading rapidly towards Falaise from the north and the east. The fighting in the lanes and fields was intense, as the Allies battled hard to overcome determined resistance by some 80,000 German troops. With so many men and weapons on the ground, it is not surprising that they were eventually undone by fierce artillery fire from three sides and by constant attacks from the air. The Gap was closed on 19th August, leaving only a small pocket of German resistance that was overrun on 21st August. The losses for the Germans were catastrophic – 10,000 killed, 50,000 taken prisoner, nearly 600 tanks and assault guns destroyed and 7,500 vehicles lost. My Website: 🤍 The Battle for Caen was a fierce military engagement fought between the Allied Forces and the German Army during the Second World War. The objective was to capture the strategically important city of Caen in Normandy, France, which was heavily fortified, making it difficult for the Allies to advance. The battle began on June 6, 1944, and lasted over a month, marked by intense street fighting and heavy casualties on both sides. The Allies finally captured the city on July 19, 1944, despite suffering heavy losses. The victory allowed the Allies to break through the German defenses and advance towards Paris, but the city of Caen was left in ruins, with most of its buildings destroyed or severely damaged.
Historically, it was largely due to William the Conqueror that Caen grew into a great city beside the River Orne. William’s wife, Matilda of Flanders, was also involved. Each commissioned a grand abbey, the Men’s Abbey for William and the Women’s Abbey for Matilda, both of which remain hugely impressive places to this day. Between them, the many-turreted Caen Castle was one of the most important in the duchy of Normandy; it now houses two museums. Famously, the first crucial, successful action of the D-Day operations on 6 June 1944 was when the British 6th Airborne Division secured the bridges downstream of Caen, between the towns of Bénouville and Ranville. Recognizing the strategic importance of the city, the Germans dug in and battled hard to keep them at bay. As a result, weeks of violent and exhausting battle ensued as British and Canadian troops attempted to seize a city that had turned into a fortress. Like other key cities in Normandy in the invasion area, Caen was a vital road junction and a crucial strategic location. From here, the Allies could then break out into more open land to the southeast where their tanks could travel freely. The Germans hoped to keep the Allies from capturing it denying them the opportunity to march east to west, and break out of the bocage. As survivors of the Allied bombings of Caen recall the devastating raids that reduced the city to rubble, French resentment persists over the operation to "flatten" towns and villages in the battle for Normandy in which 20,000 civilians died. While thousands of veterans gather in Normandy to honour their fallen comrades, France will begin the 70th anniversary of D-Day remembering the civilian casualties of what some regard as "criminal" Allied bombing raids. Some French locals still have "a problem" with the actions of the British, who were referred to as "bastards" by some shortly after devastating RAF raids on the city of Caen and other Norman towns and villages. On Friday, president François Hollande will kick off what is likely the last major D Day anniversary for most veterans with a national ceremony the first of its kind to honour the 20,000 French civilians who died in the battle for Normandy. It will be held in Caen, which the French call "a city martyred for peace" because of the terrible damage and loss of civilian life wreaked by massive British and American bombardment.
