Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber (18 or 19 November 1786 – 5 June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, guitarist and critic, one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Please support my channel: 🤍 Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73 (1811) 1. Allegro moderato (0:00) 2. Adagio ma non troppo (7:45) 3. Rondo. Allegretto (Allegro) (13:37) Walter Boeykens, clarinet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic conducted by James Conlon Description by James Leonard Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, in 1811 after his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchester in E flat major, Op. 26, and before his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74. All three works were written for and dedicated to the clarinetist Heinrich Joseph Baermann, and all three show a complete understanding of the capabilities of the instrument. Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 is distinctly different from the earlier concertino: where the earlier work is lightly playful and lyrically expressive, the Concerto No. 1 is deeply serious and dramatically, almost operatically, expressive. The concerto is in three movements: a forceful opening Allegro, an intensely expressive central Adagio, and an energetic closing Rondo Allegretto. Weber is clearly a master of the Romantic orchestra, and his writing for the soloists is supremely skillful throughout.

Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber (18 or 19 November 1786 – 5 June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, guitarist[3] and critic, and was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Weber's operas Der Freischütz, Euryanthe and Oberon greatly influenced the development of the Romantische Oper (Romantic opera) in Germany. Der Freischütz came to be regarded as the first German "nationalist" opera, Euryanthe developed the Leitmotif technique to an unprecedented degree, while Oberon may have influenced Mendelssohn's music for A Midsummer Night's Dream and, at the same time, revealed Weber's lifelong interest in the music of non-Western cultures. This interest was first manifested in Weber's incidental music for Schiller's translation of Gozzi's Turandot, for which he used a Chinese melody, making him the first Western composer to use an Asian tune that was not of the pseudo-Turkish kind popularized by Mozart and others. A brilliant pianist himself, Weber composed four sonatas, two concertos and the Konzertstück in F minor (concert piece), which influenced composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Mendelssohn. The Konzertstück provided a new model for the one-movement concerto in several contrasting sections (such as Liszt's, who often played the work), and was acknowledged by Stravinsky as the model for his Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra. Weber's shorter piano pieces, such as the Invitation to the Dance, were later orchestrated by Berlioz, while his Polacca Brillante was later set for piano and orchestra by Liszt. Weber's compositions for clarinet, bassoon, and horn occupy an important place in the musical repertoire. His compositions for the clarinet, which include two concertos, a concertino, a quintet, a duo concertante, and variations on a theme from his opera Silvana, are regularly performed today. His Concertino for Horn and Orchestra requires the performer to simultaneously produce two notes by humming while playing—a technique known as "multiphonics". His bassoon concerto and the Andante e Rondo ungarese (a reworking of a piece originally for viola and orchestra) are also popular with bassoonists. Weber's contribution to vocal and choral music is also significant. His body of Catholic religious music was highly popular in 19th-century Germany, and he composed one of the earliest song cycles, Die Temperamente beim Verluste der Geliebten ([Four] Temperaments on the Loss of a Lover). Weber was also notable as one of the first conductors to conduct without a piano or violin. Weber's orchestration has also been highly praised and emulated by later generations of composers – Berlioz referred to him several times in his Treatise on Instrumentation while Debussy remarked that the sound of the Weber orchestra was obtained through the scrutiny of the soul of each instrument. His operas influenced the work of later opera composers, especially in Germany, such as Marschner, Meyerbeer and Wagner, as well as several nationalist 19th-century composers such as Glinka. Homage has been paid to Weber by 20th-century composers such as Debussy, Stravinsky, Mahler (who completed Weber's unfinished comic opera Die drei Pintos and made revisions of Euryanthe and Oberon) and Hindemith (composer of the popular Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber). Weber also wrote music journalism and was interested in folksong, and learned lithography to engrave his own works. Carl Maria von Weber Tracklist: 1. Concerto 1 Opus 73 - Alegro 2. DER FREISCHÜTZ Romantische Oper in 3 Aufzügen Composer: Carl Maria von Weber (1786–1826) Libretto: Johann Friedrich Kind First performance: Schauspielhaus Berlin, 18 June 1821 SETTING: Bohemia, at the end of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) PLOT: The ‘Freischütz’ is a marksman who has made a pact with the devil for ‘Freikugeln’, magic bullets that can shoot whatever he wants; the seventh bullet, however, is the devil’s. In Weber’s opera, Kaspar, the assistant forester, has sold his soul to Samiel, the Black Huntsman, and is due to lose it the next day. Kaspar persuades Max, an assistant forester, to make magic bullets; Max has to show his prowess at a competition the next day to succeed the head forester and marry his daughter Agathe. In this way, Kaspar hopes to gain another three years of life. Despite Agathe and her cousin Ännchen’s warnings, Max goes to the dreadful Wolf’s Glen at midnight, where Kaspar summons Samiel and makes the magic bullets. Kaspar’s plans fail; Samiel drags him to hell, and, after a year of probation, Max will marry Agathe. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74 (1811) 1. Allegro (0:00) 2. Romanze. Andante con moto (8:12) 3. Alla Polacca (14:56) Walter Boeykens, clarinet and the Rotterdam Philharmonic conducted by James Conlon Description by James Leonard Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) composed his Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 74, in 1811 immediately after his Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, and his Concertino for Clarinet and Orchestra in E flat major, Op. 26. Like the earlier works, Weber wrote his Concerto No. 2 for clarinet virtuoso Heinrich Joseph Baermann and the work displays a thorough knowledge of the capacities of the instrument. After the most dramatic Concerto in F minor, the Concerto in E flat major revisits the more lighter and more lyrical world of the Concertino in E flat. Set in three movements, the Concerto in E flat opens with a virtuosic Allegro, moves through a gloriously bel canto Andante Romanza, and closes with a playful Alla Polacca. As in all his orchestral works, Weber's mastery of color and tone is complete and his writing for the soloist is breathtakingly difficult but wholly idiomatic.

Oberon, or The Elf King's Oath is a 3-act romantic opera in English with spoken dialogue and music by Carl Maria von Weber. The libretto by James Robinson Planche was based on a German poem, Oberon, by Christoph Martin Wieland, which itself was based on the epic romance Huon de Bordeaux, a French medieval tale. First performed at Covent Garden, London on 12 April 1826, with Miss Paton as Reiza, Mme. Vestris as Fatima, Braham as Huon, Bland as Oberon and the composer conducting, it was a triumph with many encores, and the production was frequently revived. The libretto was later translated into German by Theodor Hell, and it is in this German translation that the opera is most frequently performed. Carl Maria von Weber: Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 19, J.50 - Dresden Staatskapelle, Otmar Suitner (conductor): I.Allegro con fuoco – 00:00 II. Andante – 07:46 III. Scherzo.Presto – 13:48 IV. Finale. Presto – 17:34 Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber (18 or 19 November 1786 – 5 June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, pianist, guitarist, and critic, and was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic school. Weber is of course famous for his operas, of which Der Freischütz, Oberon, Euryanthe and Abu Hassan are the best known today. Of his solo piano works, the sonatas are neglected, but Invitation to the Dance has never lost its popularity. The two piano concertos are rarely played, although that perennial virtuoso challenge, the fiendish Konzertstuck for piano and orchestra, still crops up in concert programmes from time to time, and Weber's chamber works stand alongside Mozart's. His concerti and other pieces for clarinet, bassoon and horn have also remained firmly in the repertory, but the songs and choral music are lost in obscurity. Weber's orchestration has been highly praised and emulated by later generations of composers – Berlioz referred to him several times in his Treatise on Instrumentation while Debussy remarked that the sound of the Weber orchestra was obtained through the scrutiny of the soul of each instrument. Carl Maria von Weber's Symphony No. 1 in C was written in 1806–1807. While not usually acknowledged as among Weber's greatest works, it is a testament to the young composer's gift of melody. Though written true to form in the classical style, the music contained in the First Symphony is undoubtedly Romantic - a trend first introduced by Beethoven in his Eroica Symphony which had premiered only the year before. The first movement, in sonata form, opens with a four-note motif (the main theme) on full orchestra, and demonstrates Weber's flair for writing creative tunes.

Carl Maria von Weber - Piano Concerto No. 2 in E flat major, Op.32, Roland Keller (piano), Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Siegfried Köhler (conductor) Initial recording - 1979 1.Allegro Moderato – 0:00 2.Adagio – 08:26 3.Rondo. Presto – 13:16 Carl Maria von Weber (18 or 19 November 1786 – 5 June 1826) was a German composer, conductor, virtuoso pianist, and critic who was one of the first significant composers of the Romantic era. Best known for his operas, he was a crucial figure in the development of Romantische Oper (Romantic opera). Throughout his youth, his father, Franz Anton, relentlessly moved the family between Hamburg, Salzburg, Freiberg, Augsburg and Vienna. Consequently he studied with many teachers – his father, Johann Peter Heuschkel, Michael Haydn, Giovanni Valesi, Johann Nepomuk Kalcher and Georg Joseph Vogler – under whose supervision he composed four operas, none of which survived complete. His mature operas – Silvana (1810), Abu Hassan (1811), Der Freischütz (1821), Die drei Pintos (1820–21), Euryanthe (1823), Oberon (1826) – were a major influence on subsequent German composers. “In a letter dated 1822 Carl Maria von Weber wrote: 'The enormous acclaim which has been granted to my Freischütz is a very dangerous enemy for all my operas to come'. With hindsight it must be acknowledged that the success of Der Freischütz eclipsed not only the later operas, but in reality all of Weber's other works. Granted, this romantic opera must be considered a focal point in the whole of Weber's works, but it is more than Der Freischütz which is important in the approximately 300 compositions in all forms which he produced. The Piano Concertos No. 1 (C major, Op. 11, J. 98, composed in 1810) and No. 2 (E flat major, Op. 32, J.155, composed in 1811) and the Konzertstuck Op. 79 (J. 282) of 1821 form just one aspect of his enormously wide-ranging compositions for piano. Weber's solo concertos were composed in the early stages of the rise of the virtuoso as such. Concert life in general was moving from aristocratic circles into the realm of the general public, and accordingly these concertos reflect the spirit of the times in their effective virtuoso brilliance. It is true that Weber, himself a piano virtuoso, recognized the inherent danger which later was to manifest itself with so much glittering superficiality. In his novel Tonkiinstlers Leben he stated: 'These dammed pianist's fingers, which eventually gain a sort of independence and obstinate consciousness while being trained and mastered, are unwitting tyrants and dictators of the creative powers.' Yet to Carl Maria von Weber a compromise between technical brilliance and artistic expression seems to be possible, for he writes in 1810: '... It is certain that no painting would ever be painted, no drama written, no music composed, if there were not the inner urge within the artist to affect others and to compel him to do so'. It can be assumed that by using the term 'affect' he meant more than just cause amazement by impressive virtuosity. In Weber's Piano Concertos we witness the beginning of the dissolution of the classic principle of the sonata form, which was a phenomenon of the early 19th century. It is true that Weber roughly retains the structure of the hitherto customary 'concerto', yet he abandons the strictness of the working-out of motifs within this framework. Instead he has a sequence of rhapsodic and free successions of ideas — he replaces it by a rhythmic precision, with melodic vitality (here we find the composer of operas), and brilliant virtuosity. They now become the essential elements.” (from note by Bernward Lamerz and other sources)

Erich Kleiber / Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra Ottokar: Alfred Poell / Kuno: Heiner Hern / Agathe: Elisabeth Grümmer / Ännchen: Rita Streich / Kaspar: Max Proebstl / Max: Hans Hopf / Kilian: Kurt Marschner Historic recording made for the West German radio in 1955, together with the recordings of Erich's son Carlos and Harnoncourt's my favorite Freischütz, it sports the most homogeneous cast of the three, by far. Elizabeth Grümmer is unequaled in the role of Agathe and I just love Max Proebstl's almost comically evil Kaspar. He does a great job at portraying that sort of operatic caveman that first appears in this opera, the kind we meet again in Fafner and Fasolt in Wagner's Ring for example. But the real star of the recording is Erich Kleiber, the precision and transparency he draws from the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra (then freshly founded by Eugen Jochum) is still astounding, the engineers did a great job at capturing this event as well. Enjoy, I'll upload more of the opera in the near future.
