Breathtaking views, authentic places, marvelous nature makes Chamonix valley so popular among skiers and mountain enthusiasts Shared between France, Switzerland and Italy, the Mont-Blanc massif is home to the most beautiful and highest peaks in Europe. (thank you!!) 🤍 Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France. Wherever you are in the Chamonix valley, all you have to do is look up to see the majestic Mont Blanc, culminating at 4,810 meters above sea level. But that's not all: the Glacier des Bossons, the Aiguille du Midi, the Mer de Glace, the Col de Balme, the Aiguille d'Argentière, the Grandes Jorasses, the Dent du Géant... The Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley is home to thousands of snowy wonders and peaks to watch (or climb!). During summer when the snow melts, nature takes over and the landscapes are transformed, offering a completely different panorama. Although Chamonix remains a nature destination first and foremost, its town center is breathtaking. In summer, it is particularly pleasant to stroll around this small town in bloom at the foot of the snow-capped mountains. The town of Chamonix was once just a humble mountain village. Chamonix was part of the historical land of Savoy emerged as the feudal territory of the House of Savoy during the 11th to 14th centuries. The historical territory is shared between the modern countries of France, Italy and Switzerland. The House of Savoy became the longest surviving royal house in Europe. It ruled the County of Savoy to 1416 and then the Duchy of Savoy from 1416 to 1860. The first party to publish (1744) an account of their visit was that of Richard Pococke, William Windham and others, such as the Englishmen who visited the Mer de Glace in 1741. The growth of tourism in the early 19th century led to the formation of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix in 1821, to regulate access to the mountain slopes (which were communally or co-operatively owned), and this association held a monopoly of guiding from the town until it was broken by French government action in 1892; thereafter guides were required to hold a diploma issued by a commission dominated by civil servants and members of the French Alpine Club rather than local residents. Reflecting its history, Chamonix features a mix of traditional Alpine architecture and more modern buildings. At the center of the town's pedestrian area is a lovely Baroque church. Scattered around Chamonix are old-fashioned chalets and Belle Epoque hotels, as well as rustic country lodges. The village is full of tourist shops, upscale boutiques, and gourmet restaurants. Dining options range from casual cafés and traditional brasseries to fancy gastronomic establishments. However, the best way to enjoy the regional cuisine is experiencing a welcoming auberge or mountain refuge. 5 Incredible Hikes In Chamonix France In this short video we’ll be checking out 5 incredible hikes that we only suggest because well… We’ve done them! We’re Mike and Laura, we’re a full time traveling couple and we just spent a month living, hiking and exploring, Chamonix France. Before we get started We spent 2022 perfecting the ways of becoming full-time travel bloggers, and it's taken us places we could have only dreamed of. The Petite Balcon 🤍 The Petite Balcon is a 2.2 mile, loop hike with around a 744 ft elevation gain taking you up and under the ski lifts that go to the Brevent. There are a few signs letting you know you’re on the right path, making this a well designated trail. It starts like most hikes here in the valley by going up to reach the trail head. The trail levels off after about a mile and there you’ll find a couple clearings along this hike where you can see inspiring views of the valley. From our apartment in town it was exactly .8 of a mile to reach the beginning of this trail and this would make the Petite Balcon our daily hike. Again, we started all of our hikes from our apartment located in the city and if you have any questions or additional information about any of these hikes feel free to subscribe and leave us a comment. Another easy to get to hike straight from the city is Number 2. Cascade Dudard 🤍 If you are one to “chase waterfalls” then this next hike is for you! The Cascade Dudard is a hike to a waterfall. It’s a 2.9 mile loop hike with approximately 1,414 feet of elevation gain. Located just by the tunnel sous le Mont-Blanc, the trail head is relatively easy to find and definitely worth your time. Once you reach the wooded trail, you will be going up for a ways so make sure to bring a water bottle and a snack to enjoy at the base of this beautiful waterfall. These hikes may be too easy for some Number 3. Plan De Aiguille 🤍 The Plan De Aiguille wasn’t actually in our PLANS (bad pun I know). This is a hike we did on a whim and found it to be exciting enough to bring to the video. This 7.2 mile out and back hike, like many others is up hill and challenging but shouldn’t take too much of your day. With a 4,094 elevation gain you can bet you’ll have some pretty amazing views. How’s this for a place to grab a snack? We didn’t even get through the entire trail before we found ourselves content with the views we caught during the hike. Not hard enough? Number 4. The Brevent 🤍 An 8.1 mile loop hike with 4,734 feet of elevation gain, this hike is a challenge for any adventure seeker. Because of the steep climbs and the platforms you will reach, this is a popular hike for paragliders and hikers alike. The trail head is located right at the start of where the Petite Balcon begins but it takes you straight up the mountain instead of going back down. You concur so many switch backs and semi technical climbs, and at the end you are definitely going to need to be ready to get up ropes and ladders. Hope you’re not afraid of heights! The view points from this hike are spectacular and this is definitely one of the top tier hikes in the valley for obvious reasons. Number 5. Lac Blanc 🤍 There are a couple ways of meeting the trail head for this hike but like I mentioned previously, we are starting all of our hikes from the city. This will make our hike about 15 mile round trip climb to one of the areas most popular destinations, Lac Blanc. From Chamonix, 5,114 foot elevation gain. This hike will take the entire day. Here you get an incredible view of French Alps while you sit by an icy glacial lake. This picturesque location is honestly is the most memorable of all the hikes. This was the perfect 2-day trip to spend with friends and celebrate my 31st birthday in one of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen in France! Breakdown of Expenses (watch the full video to see all the prices) TRAVEL: The cheapest way to travel from Paris to Chamonix is by rideshare. Whether you have a car and travel with friends, or you hitch a ride from someone else using Blabla car, this will be the quickest, most efficient, and CHEAPEST way to get there! HOUSING: Airbnb offers many "chalets" or little cabin style apartments to rent during your time visiting the Alps. We found an apartment in "Chamonix Sud" which seems to have the best prices with very similar apartments throughout that can host up to 5 people relatively comfortably! RENTALS: In most towns you can find rental equipment, but I highly suggest getting your rentals from Chamonix Centre, because you will find the most competitive prices there! LIFT TICKETS: You have the option of buying lift tickets at the location, or online. The best prices can be found online at () ...you can find half-day, full-day, multiple days, or even seasonal passes depending on how long you plan to stay in Chamonix :). FOOD/DRINKS: In central Chamonix, be prepared for average/expensive prices for meals at restaurants. I would consider it very similar to the prices of certain restaurants in Paris. I highly recommend bringing sandwiches for lunch on a day you plan to ski all-day...otherwise find a lunch from a boulangerie (bakery) or supermarket at the bottom of the slope, and NOT ON THE MOUNTAIN if you're on a budget, because those are the most expensive meals you'll see in the region! This ended up being a super fast trip and I wish I had more time (and money) to stay a full week in Cham!
