Kanu notched a goal and an assist as Arsenal drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich Arsenal 2 - 2 Bayern Munich (December 2000) rsenal let slip a two-goal lead against German champions Bayern Munich at Highbury in their second group stage Champions League fixture. Manager Arsene Wenger's home side provided most of the attacking threat and took the lead through Thierry Henry in the first-half. Nwankwo Kanu increased Arsenal's advantage early in the second-half but a lack of concentration allowed Bayern a vital and immdiate equaliser through Michael Tarnat. German international Mehmet Scholl completed his side's comeback with a 25-yard free-kick to leave Arsenal bottom of their group before a break in the Champions League schedule. Kanu won a penalty and was involved in another goal, both scored by Ronaldo who bagged a hat-trick. In 1996 Kanu joined Serie A side Inter Milan for around $4.7 million. That summer he captained the Nigeria national team that won gold at the Olympics, and scored two late goals in the semi-finals against powerhouses Brazil to overturn a 2–3 scoreline into a 4–3 win in extra time.[13] Kanu was also named African Footballer of the Year for that year.[14][15] However, soon after returning from the Olympics, Kanu underwent a medical examination at Inter, which revealed a serious heart defect; he underwent surgery in November 1996 to replace an aortic valve and did not return to his club until April 1997. In interviews, Kanu frequently cites his faith as a Christian,[16] and has often mentioned this trying time of his career as an occasion when he prayed to God. Kanu's experience also led to his founding the Kanu Heart Foundation, an organisation that helps predominantly young African children who suffer heart defects and whose work was expanded to provide aid for homeless children in 2008.[17]

Nwankwo Kanu Highlights : Arsenal 5 - 1 Deportivo la Coruna The Gunners had never beaten a Spanish side in Europe before, but they broke their hoodoo in spectacular style with goals by Lee Dixon, Kanu, Dennis Bergkamp and two for Thierry Henry. Match report: 🤍 Like on Facebook : 🤍 Like on Facebook : 🤍 Follow me on twitter: 🤍 Arsenal produced some outstanding football from the outset to put the Spanish league leaders under heavy pressure. The visitors looked confident and composed in attack, but their man-marking in defence was woeful and the Gunners took just five minutes to punish them for it. Henry, back from suspension, chipped the ball into the Deportivo area where Dixon, unmarked, rose to power a header into the bottom right-hand corner of the net. Thierry Henry Thierry Henry: Two goal hero Freddy Ljungberg exploited defensive lapses to cause frequent problems for the Spanish side, while Mark Overmars and Bergkamp began to link up smoothly. Keown almost made it two with a miscued header that narrowly missed the top right corner, while Flavio - clearly frustrated at his lack of chances - earned himself a booking immediately afterwards for a bad challenge. Deportivo's first real chance came on 24 minutes, when a Djalminha free-kick was deflected off the top of Emmanuel Petit's head, forcing a quality save from David Seaman. But Arsenal had the answer, taking just four minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Bergkamp held the ball in attack and fed a perfectly weighted pass to the scampering Overmars wide on the right. The Dutchman put in an inch-perfect cross, which Henry simply had to tap inside the right post from a few yards out. Here at Highbury we have always shown we can score goals and beat anybody Arsene Wenger Bergkamp, who will also miss the away leg of this tie due to his fear of flying, produced some individual moments of brilliance to force some similarly inspired saves from Jacques Songo'o in the Spanish goal. The restart after the interval was calm enough, with the Gunners clearly set on consolidating their lead, but quarter-of-an-hour into the second half all hell broke loose. Keown had already been yellow carded for a rash tackle, meaning that he will not partner Tony Adams - on the bench for this match for "administrative purposes" only - in the away leg. Then on 54 minutes, Ljungberg was ajudged to have tripped Flavio in the area, earning Deportivo a penalty. The Swede was understandably incensed, with video-replays suggesting the striker had dived. The referee booked the Arsenal player for dissent and Djalminha stepped up to score from the spot. But within five minutes, the hotheaded Brazilian ensured that he would take no further part in the match. Kanu cheek He was booked for diving almost immediately, then became embroiled in a flare up with Gilles Grimandi, barging the striker to the ground after a tackle from behind. Djalminha was sent off and the Frenchman received a yellow card, also excluding him from the away leg. The Gunners responded by effectively killing the tie off on the home leg with a third goal. Kanu replaced Overmars and was immediately fouled on the edge of the Deportivo area. Petit put in the perfect place kick, finding Henry for the easy header at the far post to make it 3-1. With the Spanish side sleepwalking, Kanu exploited a slack back pass, following the ball in from 30 yards out and cheekily slipping the ball past the keeper after he had dived the wrong way. Replays showed that Kanu only touched the ball once - to score. Bergkamp sealed the win on 82 minutes with a blistering free-kick that caught a deflection off a defender and sailed into the top right of Songo'o's net. Arsenal: Seaman, Dixon, Keown, Luzhny, Grimandi, Silvinho, Ljungberg, Petit, Overmars, Bergkamp, Henry. Subs: Winterburn, Adams, Suker, Manninger, Parlour, Malz, Kanu. D Coruna: Songo'o, Pablo, Naybet, Mauro Silva, Romero, Djalminha, Conceicao, Donato, Jokanovic, Makaay, Flores. Subs: Schurrer, Pauleta, Fran, Scaloni, Kouba, Victor. Referee: Atanas Ouzounov (Bulgaria)

Kanu put in a Man of the Match performance and grabbed a goal but Portsmouth had to settle for a draw after a late rally by AC Milan. Nwankwo Kanu Highlights: Portsmouth 2 - 2 AC Milan Match report: 🤍 Younes Kaboul headed in Glen Johnson's pin-point cross to put Pompey ahead and Kanu doubled the lead from close range. Talk before the game had been that Milan were not relishing the prospect of a wintry evening at Fratton Park. Milan draw disappoints Pompey And it looked like Portsmouth were going to pull off a famous victory until Inzaghi's late, late intervention. Not that anyone could really begrudge the striker his reward for a performance of real menace. The former Italy international almost opened the scoring when he latched on to Andriy Shevchenko's free-kick, sending a left-footed shot against the foot of the post. Inzaghi hit the woodwork again when he raced on to Gennaro Gattuso's pass and lofted the ball over David James and against the top of the bar. In between those chances for Milan, Crouch should have done better when volleying horribly off target after being picked out by Kanu's cross into the box. It was to be the story of the night for Crouch, who later headed back into the box with the goal gaping, sent a diving header wide and mistimed an overhead kick. Pompey, though, were at least creating chances and certainly did not look overawed. Following a slick passing move, they fashioned another opening, but the angle proved too tight for Glen Little to get his volley on target. Aside from a couple of long-range efforts from world player of the year Kaka, Milan were unable to threaten. And it was no great surprise when Pompey broke the deadlock though Kaboul, who rose between two Milan defenders to thump home a header. Nine minutes later, the home side doubled their lead - and again it was Johnson who was the provider, this time sending in a cross for Kanu to convert.

Nwankwo Kanu vs Werder Bremen (23 March, 2000)

Nwankwo Kanu Highlights: Werder Bremen 2 - 4 Arsenal (23 March, 2000) Kanu provided 2 assists for Ray Parlour who scored a hat trick on the night. Like on Facebook : 🤍 Like on Facebook : 🤍 Follow me on twitter: 🤍 The Gunners completely outclassed their German opposition in a match they were forced to finish with ten men after the seemingly harsh sending off of Thierry Henry. Match facts 8 mins: Parlour scores his first 25 mins: Parlour scores his second 41 mins: Bode pulls a goal back for Bremen 59 mins: Parlour sets up Henry for Arsenal's third 60 mins: : Bogdanovic makes it 3-2 on the night 63 mins: Henry is dismissed 70 mins: Parlour secures his hat-trick Manager Arsene Wenger was also apparently ordered from the pitch after he protested too vehemently over the sending off. Leading 2-0 from the first leg Arsenal smashed in another four in Germany. Parlour not only scored his first goals of the season and his first hat-trick in an Arsenal shirt, but set up a goal for Henry as he single-handedly snuffed out the German hopes. Werder Bremen had overcome a 3-0 deficit in a duel against Lyon in an earlier round. But any pre-match speculation they may be able to repeat the feat against Arsenal was effectively scotched as early as the eighth minute when Parlour stamped his authority on the game. Cutting inside from the right flank, Parlour appeared to have few options as he looked around for his fellow Gunners. Arsenal were never troubled But the red-headed midfielder took matters into his own hands as he swiped the outside of his right foot at the ball and watched it swerve into the net. Television replays later measured his standing shot at 68 mph and the pace certainly deceived German keeper Rost. Until then the German crowd has sensed an unlikely turnover as first Ailton and then Andreas Herzog from a free-kick threatened Alex Manninger's goal. Indeed things might have been different had the referee not ruled out a 22nd minute equaliser by top-scorer Marco Bode for offside. Instead three minutes later Parlour erased any doubt his early strike may have been a rare fluke when he gave Arsenal a 4-0 aggregate lead. Picking the ball up on the edge of the box, once again with few options, Parlour wriggled through a clutch of Bremen defenders before tickling the ball skillfully inside the left-hand post. Bremen were outclassed in every department The Germans, now needing another five goals to overcome the Gunners, did not lose heart and were rewarded for their spirit four minutes before the interval when Bode pulled one back. But by then any resistance was token. Parlour added to his first-half heroics by setting up a goal for Henry fourteen minutes after the restart. Picking the ball up in acres of space on right, Parlour drove goalwards and then unselfishly cut the ball back for the Frenchman to side-foot home. Arsenal, sensing their semi-final place was secure, relaxed and had themselves to blame as Bremen hit back soon as Bogdanovic arrived late in the box to volley home. Bremen's Ailton was as ineffectual as he was at Highbury Despite conceding two goals, Arsenal appeared to be cruising to the semi-finals until Danish referee Kim Nielsen - famous for sending off England's David Beckham in the World Cup - opted to flash the red card at Henry for a late tackle. But Arsenal simply went on to strip the German weaknesses bare still further. They tore Bremen apart on several occasions until Parlour slid in another goal to record his first hat-trick in a red and white shirt. The remaining 20 minutes were merely academic, although it remains to be seen what punishment awaits Henry and Wenger. Teams: Werder Bremen: Rost, Eilts, Baumann, Trares, Pizarro, Wiedener, Bode, Herzog, Frings, Ailton, Barten. Subs: Flock, Maximow, Bogdanovic, Dabrowski, Tjikuzu, Schierenbeck, Brasas. Nwanwkwo Kanu provided 2 assists as Arsenal trounced West Brom, his future club, 5-2. Nwankwo Kanu Highlights: Arsenal 5 - 2 West Bromwich Albion Match report: 🤍 Arsenal made light work of brushing West Brom aside at Highbury with the champions cruising to victory to move to the top of the Premiership. The Gunners stormed out of the blocks against a startled Baggies side who found themselves behind after just three minutes through a goal by left-back Ashley Cole. Photo gallery: Premiership action Not to be outdone, Arsenal right-back Lauren created and scored the home side's second before Sylvain Wiltord's expert chip saw the Gunners three up midway through the first half. Jeremie Aliadiere also came off the bench to score his first goal for the Gunners late on. Arsenal: Seaman, Cole, Keown, Campbell, Lauren, Wiltord (Aliadiere 82), Vieira (Toure 79), Silva, Edu, Henry, Kanu (Parlour 67). Subs Not Used: Taylor, Luzhny. Booked: Edu, Keown, Campbell. West Brom: Hoult, Clement, Moore, Gilchrist, Sigurdsson, Balis, McInnes (Marshall 62), Johnson, Gregan, Roberts, Dobie. Subs Not Used: Wallwork, Dichio, Taylor, Jensen. Booked: McInnes, Clement. Attendance: 37,920. Referee: P Durkin (Dorset). In February 1999, after just twelve league games and one goal for Inter, Kanu was signed by Arsenal for approximately £4.15 million. He made his debut for Arsenal, against Sheffield United in the FA Cup. With the score 1–1 and ten minutes to go, the Sheffield United goalkeeper Alan Kelly kicked the ball out of touch so that treatment could be given to Lee Morris. When the ball was thrown back into play by Ray Parlour, although it was intended for Kelly, Kanu chased the throw-in down the right wing unchallenged and centered the ball for Marc Overmars, who scored to make the match 2–1. After the match, Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger accepted that it was not correct sportsmanship and offered to re-play the match[18] which was again won by Arsenal.[19] Despite the events overshadowing his debut, Kanu's career was quickly revived at Arsenal. He scored his first goal for the club in the next round of the cup against Derby County, coming off the bench to net the only goal of the game.[20] He quickly became known for his goal scoring prowess from the bench, scoring important goals against Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa as a substitute.[21][22][23] He became very popular among the fans for his two-fingered salute which started in 1999 against Middlesbrough – something that he later explained was based on the team's nickname, The Gunners.[24] Kanu was named African Footballer of the Year for the second time in 1999. In the 1999–2000 season he scored 17 times in 50 matches for the Gunners, including a hat-trick in fifteen minutes against Chelsea to turn a 2–0 deficit into a 3–2 victory. In August 2001, Arsenal rejected a bid from Fulham of around £7m for Kanu.[25] However, Kanu's appearances for Arsenal gradually became less frequent, particularly after the emergence of Thierry Henry as Arsenal's first choice striker with Kanu being mainly used as a substitute. Kanu then won the 2003 FA Cup with Arsenal.[26] Along with other famous players, such as Henry and Robert Pires, Kanu is a member of the "Invincibles", the Arsenal side that finished the 2003–04 season of the Premier League undefeated. He played 197 games for Arsenal, scoring 44 goals. In the summer of 2004, after his contract with Arsenal ended, he moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer. In 2008, Kanu was voted 13th in the "Gunners' Greatest 50 Players" poll.[27] In the summer of 2006, Kanu played as a guest for Arsenal in Dennis Bergkamp's testimonial game, the first match to be played in Arsenal's new Emirates Stadium. The game was tied 1–1 when Kanu scored the winning goal, making him the third person to score in the stadium. At the end of the match, Kanu joined the rest of the Arsenal side in hoisting the retired Dutchman on their shoulders as fans gave him a standing ovation.[28][29] He remains a popular figure at Arsenal, being applauded when he appears at the Emirates Stadium.[30] During his time with the club, he wore the number 25 shirt.[31]

Nwankwo Kanu vs Lazio (27-09-2000)

From the outset Arsenal took the game to Lazio, who were never allowed to settle and eventually found themselves outmanoeuvred and outwitted by Bergkamp's skill and vision and Ljungberg's finishing. Yet only a week earlier the Gunners had scared Highbury out of its wits by going 2-0 down to Shakhtar Donetsk before recovering to win 3-2 by the skin of their teeth. Wenger's players knew that against Lazio similar generosity was less likely to be similarly redeemed. Not that Wenger approached the match in a defensive frame of mind. Up front, Nwankwo Kanu and Thierry Henry were closely supported by Bergkamp, ostensibly playing on the right but with licence to roam. Such a bold plan risked Arsenal's midfield being outnumbered in an area where Lazio were particularly strong and at risk from quick Roman counter-attacks. But the willingness with which Arsenal's central defenders Tony Adams and Martin Keown stayed in an attack after a free-kick or corner re-emphasised the team's positive frame of mind. Patience, however, had to be foremost. Against players of the quality of Pavel Nedved, Diego Simeone and Juan Veron, Arsenal could not afford to give the ball away through undue haste. So they constructed their movements with care, seemingly prepared to play 10 passes or more as they searched for an opening. No simple matter this, with Alessandro Nesta, arguably the best defender of Euro 2000, guarding the heart of Lazio's back four while alongside him stood the Yugoslav Sinisa Mihajlovic, wearing a face mask either to protect a recent injury or because he had voted the wrong way in the Serbian election. For much of the first half Lazio were content to absorb Arsenal attacks which tended to break down on the final pass. After 20 minutes, when Kanu did at last find Henry in space, the French striker's shot was weak and wide. Just past the half-hour Patrick Vieira found Silvinho on the right and while Nesta's head intercepted the Brazilian's hard, dipping centre Keown followed up with a volley which did not trouble Luca Marchiegiani but reminded Highbury that Arsenal could still shoot straight. In fact the Lazio goalkeeper's best save of the half came from one of his own men, Simone Inzaghi, whose attempt to nod clear an inswinging free-kick from Bergkamp became a sharp downward header which Marchegiani stopped on the goal-line. That was in the 40th minute. Three more minutes and Arsenal were in front with a goal of delightful invention and simplicity. Kanu's crossfield lob was met by Bergkamp, who nodded it square for the incoming Ljungberg to meet the ball first time and give the goalkeeper no chance. Lazio's response was to replace a midfielder, Dejan Stankovic, with a forward, Attilio Lombardo, at half-time. Stankovic had been cautioned towards the end of the first half for fouling Silvinho and risked dismissal two minutes later for upending Henry. So the change was as much prudent as tactical. Either way this did not seem important as Arsenal needed only 11 minutes of the second half to increase their lead. Again Bergkamp was the provider, Ljungberg the scorer. Gathering a ball from Oleg Luzhny, Bergkamp ran at an oblique angle towards the Lazio defence before slipping a pass through the legs of Paolo Negro. The pass coincided perfectly with Ljungberg's sprint from the left and the Swede beat Marchegiani with a firm shot. Given the difficulty Arsenal had had in breaking down the Lazio cover for most of the first half, the ease with which they had gone 2-0 up was remarkable. But the footballing brain of Bergkamp has long since been accustomed to picking the locks of the tightest defences. Now of course Lazio were much more inclined to attack in large numbers, yet their vaunted midfield still could not gain the grip its quality had suggested. Vieira and Ray Parlour continued to break up their movements before they gained a decent momentum. Just past the hour Parlour brought down Nedved to get a yellow card. The Czech's swerving free-kick might have caused David Seaman a problem had it not been unwittingly blocked by Negro before it could reach the goalkeeper. Free-kicks looked Lazio's best chance of getting back into the contest. With their midfield neutralised, neither Inzaghi nor Claudio Lopez were getting the sort of service they needed to disturb Adams and Keown. Arsenal (4-3-1-2): Seaman; Luzhny, Keown, Adams, Silvinho; Parlour, Vieira, Ljungberg; Bergkamp; Kanu, Henry. Lazio (4-4-2): Marchegiani; Negro, Nesta, Mihajlovic, Pancaro; Stankovic, Simeone, Veron, Nedved; Claudio Lopez, Inzaghi. Referee: J M Garcia-Aranda (Spain).

Kanu provided the winning assist as Arsenal came from 2 goals down to claim a 3-2 win at home over Shakhtar Donetsk. Nwankwo Kanu Highlights: Arsenal 3-2 Shakhtar Donetsk Match Report: 🤍 🤍 Two goals from Martin Keown handed Arsenal a last-gasp win against their Ukrainian opponents at Highbury. Shakhtar went 2-0 up in the first-half and looked destined for victory. But before the interval they had a man sent off and Frenchman Sylvain Wiltord grabbed a goal back following a contentious penalty. And in the last six minutes Keown became the improbable goalscoring hero, chesting his first in from a corner and then coolly slotting home following great work by Kanu. Arsenal flooded forward in the early stages and looked likely to overwhelm their opponents. Kanu, Robert Pires and Fredrik Ljunberg all had good chances inside the first 15 minutes but were thwarted by Shakhtar's impressive goalkeeper Yurii Virt. Thierry Henry did manage to beat Virt with a curling free kick from the edge of the area after 24 minutes, but this time the crossbar frustrated him. Despite Arsenal's dominance, it was Shakhtar who opened the scoring with their first shot on target in the 25th minute. Alexei Bakharev's 20-yard free-kick was wickedly deflected when it hit the advancing Pires and David Seaman was helpless as the ball went wide of him into the net. The disbelief of the Highbury crowd grew two minutes later when Shakhtar added a second. Shevchuk crossed into the box and Atelkin neatly cushioned the ball into the path of Vorobyey, who netted from an acute angle. Shakhtar Shakhtar celebrate their second goal But home spirits started to lift at the end of the half. In the 44th minute Popov was sent-off for a second bookable offence after blocking Patrick Vieira when the Frenchman had knocked the ball past him. And then with two minutes of injury time gone, the referee handed Arsenal a penalty - and a lifeline. Sylvain Wiltord, a lively substitute for the injured Pires, went sprawling in the box as he moved for a cross from Lee Dixon. Virt brilliantly parried Henry's penalty, but Wiltord followed up to slot the ball past him. Arsenal created a plethora of chances from the first minute of the restart. Kanu showed some fantastic skill in the box in the 50th minute, beating several men but then dragging his shot wide. Then Henry saw a clever backheel go wide and Wiltord went close with a couple of good opportunities. Sylvain Wiltord Sylvain Wiltord scored Arsenal's first goal Even the normally goal-shy Lee Dixon shot powerfully from inside the area, but saw the inspired Virt block his effort on the line. It looked like Arsenal would never score, but they ended up getting goals from a most improbable source. After 84 minutes Martin Keown came forward for a corner and chested the ball into the Shakhtar goal. Then with a minute of injury time gone, the defender slotted home after the Shakhtar defence had been opened up by the trickery of Kanu. Arsenal: David Seaman; Lee Dixon, Martin Keown, Oleg Luzhny, Silvinho; Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira, Gilles Grimandi, Fredrik Ljungberg; Thierry Henry, Kanu.
