This incredible McLaren P1 is the only P1 to be originally delivered from the factory with a fully exposed carbon fiber body. It was recently sold by Broad Arrow Auctions during their 2023 Amelia Island sale for over $2.4 million setting a record price paid for a McLaren P1. The P1 was part of the Hypercar Holy Trinity of the early 2010s that ushered in a new era of performance vehicles for the street and cemented the P1 as a historic hypercar alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. Join Hagerty Drivers Club 🤍 In this World Wide WEB exclusive Henry Catchpole drives a car that Peter PARKER would surely be a fan of - the McLaren P1 Spider, created by Lanzante. Hopefully that’s got the puns out of the way along with the obligatory Spider-Man reference to help nudge along the SEO. For now this is the only P1 Spider in existence. Eventually there will be five customer cars in addition to this prototype, which is undergoing final development, but it will remain an incredibly rare sight. It is the work of Lanzante, the same company that took the McLaren F1 GTR to victory at the 24hrs of Le Mans in 1995. Now an authorised McLaren service centre (specialising in the Ultimate Series cars) and well known for its special projects, Lanzante has brought to life what feels like the final piece of the open top hybrid hypercar puzzle - Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, Porsche 918 Spyder and now this. With the P1’s original designer, Paul Howse, helping to shape the Spider and with the P1’s original test driver, Chris Goodwin, giving feedback on the dynamics, it’s no wonder that it looks and feels like a factory car. It’s also testament to the car’s aesthetic rightness that it looks like it would be a fairly easy job to take the roof off a P1, but as Dean Lanzante explains to us in this film it has taken a lot of work. We were given a limited mileage with the P1 Spider, so we decided to make the most of every single yard and have it transported straight to a fabulous piece of road that would really test it. Ten years on from the P1’s launch, its turbocharged V8 and electric motor (producing a combined the 903bhp and 664lb ft of torque) still feels mighty and the sounds that it produces are arguably even more wild in this Spider version. Would you believe it, the McLaren P1 is now celebrating it's 5th birthday! To coincide with the anniversary, I have the opportunity to take out the single most famous example of a P1 and show you an in depth look before a proper drive in this epic hypercar! Is this not just a dream?! Launched originally at the 2012 Paris Motorshow, the McLaren P1 was the second model from the new look McLaren Automotive, following on the heels of the MP4-12C supercar. With an entry to the hypercar territory with 916PS and 980Nm thanks to a combination of a 3.8l twin-turbo V8 and a KERS setup like the Formula 1 cars, it certainly demonstrated serious intent. Even today, this is quite a phenomenal machine and the used prices of the 375 original McLaren P1s have shot up from their £866k start price to approximately £1.5 million on the market. It's no surprise when you look at the statistics and what it was able to achieve. This particular car, prototype PP3, known fondly as 'P1 OOV' has been seen on the covers of hundreds of magazines, it's been driven at the Goodwood Festival of Speed by Jenson Button, in Belgium by Jeremy Clarkson and around Yas Marina by Chris Harris. It's finished in beautiful Amethyst Black with an interior that demonstrates race car in every way possible.
