#shoemaking #icanmakeshoes #howtomakeshoes Making shoes is such a fun and rewarding DIY project, whether you're looking to create a unique pair of shoes for yourself or start your own shoe-making business. While making shoes and boots requires a few basic hand tools and materials, it’s much easier than you’d first think and definitely something that anyone can learn from home, with a little practice and patience! No matter the style; whether it’s a pair of sandals, boots, or anything in between, there’s a simple formula involved in making a pair of shoes from scratch which I thought I’d share with you… To read the full breakdown of exactly what's involved in making shoes from home, I made a suuuuuper detailed blog post which you can read here: 🤍 If you are wanting to dive a little deeper into the world of home shoemaking, my online Footwear Masterclass is one of the most popular shoemaking courses in the world!! 🌍 (Casual brag! lol) The course covers how to make shoes from scratch including heels, flats, boots, sneakers, sandals, and more. The thing that really sets this course apart from others is that it's specifically designed for total beginners and requires very little in the way of tools & equipment, there's even a bonus module on how to start your own shoe brand. To make getting started even easier, the course comes with a FREE Shoemaking Starter Kit, delivered to your door, anywhere in the world! 🌍 To take a look at the online shoemaking course, click here: 🤍 Happy Shoemaking Amanda xx Pssssssst.... Thank you to HelloFresh for sponsoring this video. Use code NICOLER14 for up to 14 FREE MEALS across your first 5 HelloFresh boxes plus free shipping at 🤍 The most common request I get is to do more shoemaking tutorials- which is probably the most difficult thing to make! Shoemaking is incredibly complex, and unlike sewing clothing, there's little room for error and adjustment. And if something doesn't fit, it can be very painful. So, as I was preparing to start a pair of early 19th century shoes this month, I figured this might be the best place to start! I know it seems a bit out of order, but I think it's important to understand HOW these things go together to understand why future videos on lasts, fitting, patterning, etc are so essential and how they work! The Regency through the early Victorian era has some of the simplest shoes as well. Completely flat styles start appearing at the beginning of the century and continue on through the early 1850s. There's more than one method of shoemaking during this time, and there is a wide variety of styles as well, but the basics of the process are fairly universal. For this video, I'm using a process of cementing the shoe together. This wasn't common until the 1830s, but it's how most modern shoes are produced and is MUCH simpler than the stitching methods of previous decades. The result won't look different from the exterior, but it requires about half as many tools and supplies and a quarter of the time (honestly probably less). Fun fact: in the Regency era it was trendy for a while to learn to make your own shoes! This didn't last terribly long as the tooling up and educational process could be expensive (and bad for your hands). The shoes weren't cheaper, and neither were all of those new dresses needed after hulking up from pulling stitches tight. But it does sound like something straight out of a Jane Austen novel! Below I have some links for sources of lasts, supplies, leather, and tools. The first section is specifically shoemaking supply shops who have most, if not all, of the types of items I have on my recommended list. The other shops after this may not have everything, but will have a better variety of certain items. I also recommend Etsy and Ebay- especially for lasts. Shoe making has been on my mind for many years now. After finding out that making shoes with the Goodyear construction of Blake stitch method is too difficult for a beginner I Googled around to look for an easy way to make shoes. On Kickstarter I found a kit to make sneakers from leather: SneakerKit. After thinking about buying this for 1 minute, I ordered one of these shoe making kits online. In this video I will be reviewing the sneaker making process and show you how to make shoes using this wonderful kit. I even got myself a nice new brown dyed veg tan leather hide. Have fun watching this leather working and shoe making video! You can find SneakerKit on 🤍 And the template on 🤍 About me: My name is Tony. I am a guy from the Netherlands who speaks bad English with an even worse Dutch accent. I like to try out new hobbies and create stuff. I often get questions about shoemaking kits, so I figured it was time to answer them properly! 🤍AbbyCox and I are taking on sandals from The Shoe Camaraderie (and hopefully not setting the house on fire). As a historical shoemaker, I don't have a lot of experience with modern techniques, but the concepts are familiar. But, as many of these kits are aimed at the absolute beginner, I've brought Abby along to test things out as well! Kits from 🤍 Abby made Astrid, I made Ines. As noted, they are going on a one year break and are having a sale which was extended to August 7th to deal with sudden demand, but may not have enough available for everyone (there are other options below). Shoemaking kits (or sandal making kits) can be a great way to start out learning this new skill or to just do a fun adult craft! Some are sold as complete bundles with instructions, supplies, and tools. Others will sometimes split these parts up, so be sure you're grabbing everything you need (and nothing that you don't). I was honestly surprised at how easy it was to tailor our supply needs when purchasing, as I already have a fairly full kit of shoemaking tools. Handmade bespoke dress shoes take months to make. Shoemakers transform rough measurements of a customer's feet into a one-of-a-kind shoe. One pair can cost over £5,000. London has been a hub for shoemaking for centuries, and while the industry has shrunk over time, an increase in demand from Japan and the US has helped to reignite interest in this craft. So, why would someone buy bespoke dress shoes? And what makes them so expensive? I've been practicing historical shoemaking since 2012, but have never worked so far back in time as this pair of shoes. However, it turns out that the 15th century isn't that different than the 18th century in terms of construction techniques! The trade of shoemaking is one of the oldest official trades and its methods of hand sewing were well established and refined even by this point in history. Shoemaking is its own distinct trade which depending on numerous other trades to exist. Historically some one else would have been making the wooden lasts, providing the supplies, making the tools, etc. It's also a separate thing from Cobblers, as they work to repair old shoes (not make new ones) and were never an established trade. In fact, it was considered "unskilled work" at the time. It would be another 400 years before a shift occurred in how shoes were being made, but even now we still use the same stitching techniques for hand made shoes. It wasn't until the 19th century that using various forms of rubber based cements became a standard shoemaking method. Instead, heavy waxed threads wound onto boar bristle needs are used in conjunction with awls and knives. The stitching is incredibly strong and durable. I originally didn't intend to create this video but I realised that in the previous video I left out some important information. In this video I'll show you how to choose a shoe last that is the right style and size for you. This series will run through all of the steps involved in making a pair of derbies. It is aimed at people wanting to make a start in shoemaking. I am new to videomaking and have made many mistakes in the production of these videos. I hope you can look past them. This particular video features terrible editing, awkward pauses, a very blocked nose and continuity errors.
