Dylan was first introduced to yoga in 2001 as a part of his martial arts training, but it wasn't until 2009 when he made the yoga practice a part of his daily life and started to understand the true journey of the yogi. Since 2011, Dylan has been teaching yoga. Though a lover of movement, handstands, arm balances and creative sequencing, his focus is the integration of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence to create a space to deepen the inner connection. In 2015, Dylan gave up his home in California to travel and teach workshops, teacher trainings, festivals, and retreats. He has taught in over 60 countries and more than 400 workshops or events. To be honest, I've always felt that fallen angel was a pose that looked really fancy and complicated but in fact, I find it easier than a lot of other arm balances and inversions! I'll show you my two favorite ways of doing Fallen Angel, the first way is to enter it from Side Crow and the other way is from Eka Pada Koundinyasana 2. Before attempting this pose, you should be able to do crow pose, side crow and eka pada 1 and 2. If those poses aren't yet in your repertoire, hold off before attempting this one otherwise you will hurt yourself. Good conditioning to build up strength includes chaturanga pushups, core work and playing around with crow pose. Sorry I got so out of breath in this tutorial! Arm balances can be a little intimidating for a yoga newbie. Bakasana is usually the first arm balance which a yoga beginner attempts. The wrists and shoulders are the foundation of this pose, but it takes time to build strength in those areas. The crane pose in yoga, also known as the Bakasana, is a compact arm balancing posture that helps in strengthening the arms as well as the abdominal organs. In Bakasana you consciously attempt to contract your front torso and round your back completely. The crane is an Asian symbol for happiness and youthfulness. It also stands for longevity in Chinese symbolism. This asana is the culmination of all these three symbols, and practising it will ensure all these three characteristics. It takes a leap of faith to get into this asana, but once you do, you are sure to feel light and joyful. This fun pose is sure to renew your attitude towards life. This asana is also called the Kakasana. There is only a slight difference between the two. While the Bakasana resembles the stance of a crane, the Kakasana looks more like a perched crow. It is the same asana, with your arms slightly bent so that the knees come close to the triceps. How to: 1. Stand straight on the mat. 2. Slowly, fold at the hips, bending down. 3. Bend until your body is lying perfectly over your thighs. 4. Slightly, bend your knees too, pushing your body forward. 5. Place your palms on the ground and come onto your toes. 6. Finally, shift forward and lift one of your feet off the ground. 7. Once you're comfortable and balanced in this posture, carefully lift the other feet too. 8. Your knees must by lying on the backside of your upper arms. 9. Hold this posture for a few deep breaths. 10. Slowly, lower your legs back to the ground. 11. Therefore, this asana aids digestion. 7. Your inner thighs become strong. 8. Your groin area is opened up. 9. With regular practice, you feel strong and confident. Caution: It is best to avoid this asana if you have the following conditions: a. Carpal tunnel syndrome b. Pregnancy c. A current or chronic wrist pain Best time: You must make sure to keep your stomach and bowels empty before you practice this asana. I love playing with different arm balances and this flow has a bunch built-in. Try them with blocks so you get more lift off the ground. No need to be an expert. Work this flow to build arm, shoulder, and core strength. We play with scale pose/tolasana, pendant pose/lolasana, crow pose/kakasana or bakasana if you can straighten your arms!, hurdler's pose/koundinyasana 2, side crow/parsva bakasana to koundinyasana 1, flying pigeon/eka pada galavasana, hummingbird/also known as grasshopper or dragonfly, compass pose, and 8 eight angle/astavakrasana. This was supposed to be a 20 minute flow but we got a little carried away, so it's closer to 30 minutes. (eka pada 2 for short, it's a mouthful!) Not only does this pose require a strong upper body, you also need quite a bit of hamstring flexibility to be able to extend your legs. This flow will warm you up in just the right way to give you your best shot at balancing on your hands. We'll do a lot of core work and then get into poses like pyramid, wide fold and Warrior 2 to open up your hips and hamstrings. In this class we play with several popular arm balances and inversions. We flow to create warmth and prepare for the poses, and incorporate different steps and ways to get into them. Teacher's note: at one point I forgot to reset the camera, so you get to listen along to a short portion instead of watching (sorry!) Poses we work on include: crow pose (bakasana), side crow (parsva bakasana), headstand (sirsasana), forearmstand (pincha mayurasana), handstand (adho mukha vrksasana), hurdler's poses (koundinyasana 2), flying pigeon (eka pada galavasana), firefly (tithibhasana), hummingbird (maksikanagasana), and eight angle pose (ashtavakrasana).
