U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said on Monday it's seeing "increased levels of migrant encounters at the Southwest Border, fueled by smugglers peddling disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals and encourage migration." In a news release on Nov. 27, CBP said it was temporarily suspending vehicle processing at Eagle Pass International Bridge 1 in Texas, and it will reduce vehicle processing in Lukeville, Arizona. The closures are in an effort to redirect personnel to the border to take migrants into custody. "In response to this influx in encounters, we will continue to surge all available resources to expeditiously and safely process migrants. We will maximize consequences against those without a legal basis to remain in the United States. CBP will continue to prioritize our border security mission as necessary in response to this evolving situation," CBP said. An ethnic minority armed group in Myanmar has seized control of a lucrative border crossing to China, in the latest escalation in a massive offensive against the Southeast Asian nation’s ruling junta. Fierce fighting began in Myanmar’s northern Shan state on October 27 after an alliance of three ethnic minority groups launched a surprise operation against the military. The offensive, known as “1027” has since triggered a wave of armed resistance across the strife-ridden nation, sweeping from the Indian to the Thai border areas, and confronting the military with the biggest threat to its power since it staged a coup in February 20201. In the latest attack on the junta, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) - one of the three allied groups – captured the Kyin San Kyawt border gate, reported AFP, citing a local media outlet and security source. A vehicle speeding toward a U.S.-Canada bridge from the American side crashed and exploded at a checkpoint in Niagara Falls on Wednesday, killing two people and prompting the closing of border crossings in the area, authorities said. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said there was “no indication of a terrorist attack.” The two deceased people were in the vehicle, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official was not authorized to discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Aaron Ferguson, a spokesperson for the city of Niagara Falls, New York, said the vehicle was traveling at high speed from that city and crashed into the border station. Jim Diodati, the mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario, told The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that what happened appeared to be “an isolated incident.” The U.S. FBI’s field office in Buffalo and other agencies were investigating the blast. Photos and video taken by bystanders and posted on social media showed thick smoke, flames on the pavement and a security booth that had been singed. Videos showed that the fire was in a U.S. Customs and Border Protection area just east of the main vehicle checkpoint. The Rainbow Bridge border crossing near Niagara Falls has been closed following a vehicle explosion on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). In a statement issued just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, the FBI’s Buffalo field office said it was investigating the explosion, which took place on the U.S. side of the border. The situation is fluid at this time, the agency said. CNN is at the US border in Texas where migrants could be seen swimming and walking around a floating barrier that the Justice Department claims violates federal law. The DOJ gave Texas a deadline of Monday at 2 p.m. ET to commit to the removal of the floating border barriers or face legal action, according to a letter sent to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. A federal judge on Tuesday blocked a rule that allows immigration authorities to deny asylum to migrants who arrive at the U.S.-Mexico border without first applying online or seeking protection in a country they passed through. Border Patrol has dropped off more than 18,500 migrants into San Diego over the past five weeks. More than 1,400 migrants have been dropped off in Oceanside and local nonprofits and city governments are stepping up to help.
