In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina gives us a real-world example of how the Hydrosphere and Geosphere affect each other in the form of Weathering and Erosion. Think of Weathering as the force that makes a mess and Erosion as the force that cleans it up. This first series is based on 5th-grade science. We're super excited and hope you enjoy Crash Course Kids! ///Standards Used in This Video/// 5-ESS2-1. Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact. [Clarification Statement: Examples could include the influence of the ocean on ecosystems, landform shape, and climate; the influence of the atmosphere on landforms and ecosystems through weather and climate; and the influence of mountain ranges on winds and clouds in the atmosphere. The geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are each a system.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to the interactions of two systems at a time.] Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet? Explaining the basics of coastal erosion with a homemade wave generator! Want more? I did a follow-up live stream to answer questions and show off the wave generator here: 🤍 We humans are fascinated with the coast. There’s something inherently interesting about seeing the place where two things meet; where the vast expanse of ocean touches the land on which we live. It might not seem like it, but there’s an endless battle going on between land and sea along every coastline in the world (and just a hint: the sea is almost always winning). Did you know the forces of nature like wind or weather change the physical structure of how things look over time? In this video for kids, you will learn all about the processes of weathering and erosion. You will discover that there are three main types of weathering and three main types of erosion. The two process seem pretty similar, but they are actually different. But they practically work together to both destroy landforms and create new ones! The three types of weathering are chemical, mechanical, and biological. Chemical weathering changes minerals inside or on the surface of rocks. Mechanical weathering is caused by ice, the sun's heat, and a couple other natural forces. Biological weathering involves plants and animals, as well as humans. It is called "biological" because this type of weathering happens because of a living organism. For instance, a tree root growing out of a rock is slowly breaking that rock into smaller pieces. The three main causes of erosion are water, wind, and ice. Water can cause erosion through rainfall, rivers, and floods. The force of water pushes or pulls rocks and sediment to a new location. Wind similarly picks up and carries loose particles and dust. And glaciers are constantly moving and shifting, which causes erosion too! We hope you and your student(s) enjoyed learning how the earth changes! Coastal erosion is becoming an increasing problem for Portugal’s Atlantic coast. Each winter brings heavier storms, and the rising sea level is endangering homes and beach promenades. How are local residents and authorities coping with the situation? The pressure on Portugal’s west coast is mounting by the year. In the north in particular, many Portuguese are fighting a desperate battle against the advancing sea, which is threatening beaches and coastal resorts. Every year, environmental authorities have to concede coastal homes to the ocean and resettle their inhabitants. The report shows how people in Portugal are battling rising sea levels and coastal erosion. Locals such as fisherman Vítor Cacheira, who can no longer make a living from coastal fishing. He now works as a town councilor in Esmoriz, promoting a resettlement program which provides affected families with secure housing. At the beach in Furadouro, surfing instructor and nature guide João Paulo sees his livelihood at stake. Restaurant owner Abel Vieira from the fishing village of Apúlia fears that his centuries-old village could soon be swept away by the sea. In recent years, many houses directly on the beach have literally fallen into the sea. Abel Vieira’s restaurant, one of many directly behind the dunes, is in danger, and many jobs with it. The central government says that it is aware of the issue. They are trying to solve the problem by pouring in millions of cubic meters of sand or erecting protective barriers. But it is a Sisyphean task. The EU has declared the fight against coastal erosion a priority and is offering financial support to the Portuguese authorities. #documentary #dwdocumentary #Portugal DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. Weathering breaks down the rock, and erosion carries the rock away. In this video, I explain the difference between weathering and erosion. Weathering weakens rocks and breaks the rock down using chemical or physical changes. The physical changes may be abrasion, wind, water, or ice. Chemical changes include oxidation, hydrolysis, and carbonation. Erosion moves the broken down rock away. This may include wind, water, or ice.

Have you ever wondered how cracks form on the sidewalk? Or have you ever thought about what caused the Grand Canyon to be so big and wide? In this video, you and your kids will learn about weathering, the three types of weathering, and how they affect the earth. Chemical weathering involves chemical reactions within the minerals inside rocks. Water, acids, and some gases contribute to chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering, or physical weathering, is caused by frost or ice, moving water, or the heat of the sun. The most common type of weathering involves water freezing in cracks in rocks. Speaking of the Grand Canyon, scientists believe it was caused by the Colorado River wearing down the rocks over the course of a long period of time. Biological weathering happens when plants and animals, as well as other living things, cause rocks to be broken into smaller pieces. Tree roots or burrowing animals like rabbits are great examples of why rocks might break as these biological influences affect them over time. The end of this video contains a short review to test your knowledge. See if you can answer all the questions correctly! Erosion and sedimentation: How rivers shape the landscape

106840
1064
37
00:03:05
20.03.2019

Erosion & Sedimentation When it rains the water is transported back to the sea by rivers. The area whose water is drained by the same river is called a catchment area. Two different rivers therefore have a different catchment area. The watershed marks the boundary between the two catchment areas. Within the river basin lies the river system: The entire river including all its tributaries. All the water that is collected in the river basin is transported by the river to the sea. Along the way the river changes the landscape. The river descends very fast stream upward, which gives the river velocity. The velocity of the water works like sandpaper and causes the surface to break down into small pieces. This material is transported downstream. When the surface falls apart into smaller pieces and the material is transported, it is called erosion. This too is an exogenous force that changes the landscape. Wind, ice and the sea can also erode and transport surface material by their power. In contrast to weathering, erosion therefore involves breaking down the landscape due to the movement of water, wind or ice and the material is transported. Beautiful landscapes can arise through erosion. For example, think of the Grand Canyon: A large gorge that is created because the Colorado River cuts further into the landscape. Many other gorges, such as the Gorge du Verdon in France, were created in the same way. Both are examples of a V-shaped valley. Glaciers can cause erosion in similar ways. High down from the mountains, they flow down slowly, but with enormous power. The valleys formed by glaciers often have a flatter pattern, which means they are called U-shaped valleys. Downstream, the river the descend decreases, which causes the river to have less velocity, which makes erosion less likely. Especially in the lower course of a river, the river has less velocity and erosion is less likely to occur. The speed of the water flow decreases, which causes the eroded material to sink to the bottom. This process of sinking is called sedimentation. Compare this with fruit juice: When the bottle has stood still for a while you see the heavier ingredients sink to the bottom. To mix all ingredients, you often have to shake before use! Sedimentation is important for countries which are close to the sea, like the Netherlands. This country is made up by a huge layer of sediment that is eroded upstream. If this had not happened, the Netherlands would have been a lot lower, so that it would have been flooded by the sea. Because rivers in the lower reaches of the river often split into all kinds of branches, we call this the river delta. These branches together have the shape of a triangle, which looks like the Greek letter D, which is called delta. In the river delta a lot of sediments sink to the bottom. These sediments often ensure that the land is fertile, causing high agricultural yields. So erosion tears down the landscape in the upper reaches of the river, while sedimentation builds the land in the lower reaches of the river.
