In this video, we discuss 9 literary devices definition & examples - Simile, Metaphor, Allegory, Conceit, Allusion, Alliteration, Assonance, Anaphora and Antithesis. Figures of speech in English Literature are used to highlight a particular description or to emphasize an interesting detail in order to beautify the literary work. Literary devices are used widely in poems, plays, novels and essays. The first two figures of speech in english grammar that we look at are similes and metaphors. Simile figure of speech is used to compare 2 unlike things with 'as' or 'like'. You can understand it better through the Simile examples discussed in the video. You can also find Metaphor meaning and metaphor definition that will help you understand how it is different from simile. We also discuss a few metaphor examples from English Literature. Next we talk about Allegory meaning and allegory examples. The Allegory literary term is used when a poem, play or novel gives a moral lesson or political message through symbolism. Conceit figure of speech is an extended metaphor with a complex logic that we can find in John Donne's poems. The conceit meaning is discussed in the video. Allusion in English Literature is used to refer to people, places, events and other literary works. In the video, we talk in detail about allusion meaning and Allusion examples. Next on our list is Alliteration. Alliteration meaning is simplified so that you can understand how it is used along with some easy Alliteration examples. Assonance in poetry is the Repitition of vowel sounds. You can understand the Assonance meaning when you take a closer look at the examples discussed in the video. The anaphora figure of speech is used for the Repitition of a word or phrase. Classic anaphora examples are the starting lines of 'Tale of two Cities' and 'Tintern Abbey'. The Antithesis figure of speech is used when writers want to put 2 contradictory ideas in a single sentence. You can understand Antithesis meaning when you will take a look at the Antithesis examples taken from Paradise Lost and Pope's work. It is very important for every English Literature student to know about the several literary devices or figure of speech. They are also frequently asked in UGC NET English Literature. In the part 2 of the video, we will discuss oxymoron, paradox and several other literary devices. So subscribe to my channel and stay tuned to Learning Literature with Purba. Figures of speech/ Part 1/ explained with Tamil songs/ Simile / Metaphor / Personification
Introduction: In today’s video, you will learn and practice Figure of speech. There are five different kinds that are usually seen in the text. Alliteration: Alliteration is a term to describe a literary device in which a series of words begin with the same consonant sound. Metaphor: A metaphor is a word or phrase for one thing that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest that they are similar. Simile: A simile is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things. The simile is usually in a phrase that begins with the words "as" or "like." Personification: Personification, a common literary tool, is a type of metaphor that comes when you relate the qualities of a person to something that isn't human or that isn't even alive, such as nature or non-living things. Imagery: Imagery is the language used by poets, novelists, and other writers to create images in the mind of the reader. Imagery includes figurative and metaphorical language to improve the reader’s experience through their senses. Speech doesn't much care about Punctuations. Importance of English grammar: English grammar is one of the most important elements of your language study. Unfortunately, it can also be one of the most complex and difficult if you’re not familiar with the rules and don’t practice them. Grammar refers to the rules and regulations that govern spoken and written language. Grammar is the code that makes language work. It is through proper grammar that we are able to communicate in a clear manner that people can understand. Good grammar means writing or speaking in such a way that your choice of words is understandable and follows the basic rules of sentence construction, punctuation, and spelling. So learning English grammar is critically important before thinking of writing or speaking English.
