Thew's a new Goodwood Hill RECORD. After 23 years Nick Heidfeld's Timed Shootout record in the McLaren MP4/13 has been broken. F1 and IndyCar star Max Chilton's new 39.08 second run in the incredible McMurtry Speirling fan car has knocked over two seconds off that time. It's also taken the Outright Hill record from the Volkswagen ID.R. Romain Dumas' time of 39.9 seconds was smashed earlier in the day in practice, and a further 0.1 seconds in the Timed Shootout. After each of the previous 4 editions of the Goodwood Festival of Speed I attended I always thought about producing a long and personal 'best of' comoilation, showing you the incredible variety of vehicles and entries at the event, but it took me a fifth time to make that video a concrete thing. This year's edition has been pretty full of anniversaries and celebrations: 30 years since the first FoS and 75 years of motorsport events at Goodwood, the 75th anniversary of Porsche's first sports car, 75 years of Lotus, McLaren's 60th anniversary, 75 years of NASCAR and, of couse, the 100 years of the Le Mans 24 Hours. Unfortunately it hasn't been the luckiest of the editions due to adverse weather conditions, which forced the organizers to cancel Saturday for strong wind forecast for the day. The 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard Timed Shootout was forced into a slightly different format due to the cancellation on Saturday. The fastest qualified cars ran first, and everyone else was added later. Despite the change this still saw a packed top 10 featuring the very fastest cars of the Festival so far. This included the incredible McLaren Solus GT, Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Travis Pastrana's Subaru GL Family Huckster, Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 'Calsonic' and more with drivers including Jake Hill, Michael Lyons and Adam Smalley. We could watch the Owlet and Frazer Nashs fly around a wet Goodwood circuit all day. These pre-war wonders constantly lose grip resulting in graceful and beautiful drifts... well, more beautiful than Tokyo Drift and DK's 350Z. Roy Salvadori once said "Give me Goodwood on a summer's day and you can forget the rest of the world." We might need to change that to "Give me Goodwood on a wet day and a handful of Frazer Nash and you can forget Fast & Furious." The second day of the Goodwood Revival was where the racing action began in earnest. Starring was the Fordwater Trophy – a two-drive battle for just early Porsche 911s – and the Lavant Cup, this year run for only V12-engined Ferrari racing cars. Some cars line up at the start line at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard and you just know they are about to be thrashed to within an inch of their mechanical lives. But some you look and just think "nah, that's gonna have a gentle one". The final day of the 2023 Goodwood Revival ended the even in style. F1 cars of the '50s and '60s, Le Mans racing cars of the '50s and '60s, Touring cars and Grand Prix bikes, it had everything. We even found time to celebrate 75 years of Lotus, Carroll Shelby and Sir Jackie Stewart. Sometimes cars are banned for being, just a bit too good, sometimes cars are banned for safety reasons, sometimes cars see the rules change to effectively ban them and sometime cars just completely and utterly break the rules until they are banned. The cars in this video, all conform to one fo those scenarios, but since we love all motorsport history at Goodwood, each one has been seen on the famous Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. It’s quite a mix too, from the Celica GT-Four, which would eventually be thrown out of the championship in its later guise for pushing the rules so far it was just plain breaking them, to the Lotus 56 turbine car, which was effectively banned when turbine-powered cars were outlawed at the Indy 500. Some of them we think are just really cool innovations, and some really did overstep the mark, but all deserve to be showcased in motorsport history. Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard saw the first ever full stage rally held by Goodwood, around five incredible, specially created stages on the Goodwood Motor Circuit and its surrounding service roads on both tarmac and gravel. With several stages run at night this was a proper test for both drivers and their co-drivers, as well as for current WRC stars Elfyn Evans and Jari-Matti Latvala, who ran as the 'zero' cars in the brand new Toyota GR Yaris. The cars were split into two different categories, with cars from legendary eras, including Group B and Group A, that don't have modern safety precautions, running as demonstrations, and any cars up to standard, including a screaming Lancia Stratos and several of the very latest R5 WRC2 cars, running competitive timed runs.
