Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. In Today’s video, we’re going to discuss the 12 Olympians gods, the 12 greatest gods who lived in Olympus, the abode of the gods, which was located in Thessaly atop Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in all of Greece. (There’s also some information that suggests Olympus was suspended in the sky high above the earth and its mountains.) The entrance of Olympus was a gate made of clouds that was watched over by the seasons, and beyond were the magnificent palaces of the gods, made by Hephaestus himself - a place of paradise where its divine denizens feasted on nectar and ambrosia, where the winds never blew, rain never poured, and snow never fell. A couple of comments before we get going: first, though he was among the most powerful gods in Greek mythology, Hades wasn’t counted among the 12 Olympians because his residence was in the underworld; second, though the 12 Olympians were the greatest of the gods who lived atop Olympus, they weren’t the only gods who called Olympus home; others included: Hebe, the goddess of youth, Iris, the goddess of rainbows, the three graces, the nine muses, and many others. Third, while 11 of the 12 Olypians (Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, Athena, Ares, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, and Hermes) are chiselled in stone, Dionysus and Hestia sort of shared that 12th spot, different listings featuring one or the other. I’ve decided to honour both, meaning our list of Olympians actually comprises 13 gods. Let’s get into it. 1- Zeus Also called Ombrios (“Rainmaker”), Keraunios (“Thunderer”), Nephelgeretes (“Cloud-Gatherer”), and Agoraios (“of Mount Olympus”), and known as Jupiter to the Romans, Zeus was the supreme deity of Greek mythology. He was the god of the sky and its various atmospheric phenomena, including: lighting, thunder, rain, and cloud cover. Beyond the celestial domain where he held absolute mastery, matters of state and gouvernance also fell within his purview. Furthermore, as the highest authority in all of creation, maintaining the rule of law was also of paramount importance to him, with the keeping of oaths, honouring the rules of hospitality, and the protecting of supplicants chief among his concerns. The 12 Olympians were the 12 most important gods and goddesses of Ancient Greek Mythology, and were so-called because it was believed they dwelt on Mount Olympus. Our Olympians Gods and Goddesses are Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Ares, Athena, Hephaestus, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes and Dionysus. Sometimes, Hestia is depicted as one of the twelve instead of Dionysus. Hades was not considered one of the 12 Olympians due to his dwelling in the underworld. These gods were all one big family, and it was messy, and confusing to follow, especially since different versions of the myths of who gave birth to whom! Much of what we know about the origins of the Greek Gods is through the epic poems of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey, and Hesiod’s Theogony which details the origins of the gods. Πρώτες εμφανίσεις στo night-club "Χαβάη" στην Ν.Κρήνη (σήμερα νοσοκομείο ΙΚΑ) με "αφεντικό" τον Τάκη Κανίδη. Η νεολαία από την πρώτη στιγμή αγκαλιάζει και στηρίζει με την αγάπη της το συγκρότημα. Ο Γιώργος Κοντόπουλος (ραδιοφωνικός παραγωγός) με τα μαγνητόφωνα του ηχογραφεί ζωντανά τους Ολύμπιανς σε μουσικό πρωινό στην "Χαβάη" και τους παρουσιάζει σε εκπομπή του στη "Φωνή της Αμερικής", την ίδια ηχογράφηση και με ζωντανή συνέντευξη των Ολύμπιανς βγάζει στον αέρα ο 'Αλκης Στέας σε εκπομπή του στο ραδιόφωνο την οποία την ακούει ο τότε διευθυντής του υποκαταστήματος στην Θεσσαλονίκη της Δισκογραφικής εταιρείας "Ελλαδίσκ" Γιάννης Σωκρατίδης ο οποίος ενθουσιάζεται και ανοίγει τον δρόμο για να ηχογραφηθούν στην Αθήνα (Δεκέμβριος 1965), με παραγωγό τον Γ.Ράλλη, ο "Τρόπος" και το "Συμπόσιο" με αποτέλεσμα την επιτυχία και αναγνώριση σ'όλη την Ελλάδα. Η πρωτοφανής επιτυχία των "Ολύμπιανς", για τα δεδομένα εκείνης της εποχής. μπορεί να αιτιολογηθεί ως εξής. Πάντα οι νέοι θέλουν να έχουν την δική τους μουσική. Ο χορευτικός ρυθμός που συγκινούσε τότε (1965) ήταν το σέικ. Οι "Φόρμινξ", που προηγήθηκαν των "Ολύμπιανς", έπαιζαν μεν μοντέρνα χορευτική μουσική, αλλά "σνόμπαραν" τον ελληνικό στίχο. Και γενικά όλα τα συγκροτήματα εκείνης της εποχής έκαναν το ίδιο, η τραγουδούσαν στα ελληνικά με ξενική προφορά.

Let’s start with a little backstory. You see, the 12 Olympian gods and goddesses were the third generation of gods in Greek mythology. The Olympian gods were basically born from the were the first generation of gods. the Titans! You see, the leader of the Titans, Cronus, was a bit of a paranoid guy. He feared that his own children would overthrow him just as he had overthrown his father. So to prevent this, he swallowed his children as soon as they were born. Yup, you heard that, right. he ate em! However, his fears proved to be true. His wife, Rhea, couldn't bear to see her children suffer the same fate as their siblings. So, she secretly gave birth to Zeus and hid him away from Cronus. Now, our little Zeus grew up to be a strong and powerful god, and when he was old enough, he managed to free his siblings from Cronus' belly. Now other than these big gods, there;s two other smaller deities who aren’t considered that much. But we can’t let them down, right? First up, we have Hestia, the goddess of the hearth. She was the final sister of Zeus and the most gentle of all the goddesses. Hestia protected the home and the earth, and originally, she was one of the twelve Olympians. Now, let's talk about Hades, the king of the underworld. Hades was the god of the dead, overseeing the underworld and the souls that came there. Like we said before; despite his important role, Hades was not welcome among the other gods or mortals. He was usually described as a sour, stern, and unsympathetic individual. However, Hades had a soft spot for his wife, Persephone, and did everything he could to keep her safe and happy. So alright guys, this is the story of the 12 greek gods, but this is just a scrape of what’s underneath and there’s a tonne of stories behind these gods.
